The 'Caring Shouldn't Cost' Belief That's Quietly Killing Your Coaching Business
Dear Karen,
You finally set a price that actually reflects the depth of your work — and immediately feel the urge to lower it.
Not because you ran the numbers and they didn't work. Not because a client pushed back. Just because. The discomfort is instant, automatic, and completely familiar.

Here's what's really happening: you're not struggling with confidence. You're living out a belief that nursing culture spent years carefully installing — that caring is a vocation, not a labor. That good healers sacrifice. That wanting fair compensation is somehow in conflict with genuinely wanting to help people.
It's called the "caring shouldn't cost" belief. And it's one of the quietest, most effective ways it keeps nurse coaches stuck.
Affirmation: I can be deeply caring and deeply compensated, my value doesn't shrink when I name my price.
The cruel part
Every moment this belief shows up, the discount you offer before anyone asks, the extra session you throw in, the rate you soften mid-conversation it feels like integrity.
That's what makes it so hard to catch.
But undercharging isn't generosity. It's self-erasure with good intentions attached to it. And an exhausted, financially stressed coach cannot hold space for deep transformation. She's too busy surviving her own pressure to be fully present for someone else's healing.
The belief that caring shouldn't cost doesn't protect your clients. It protects the version of you that's still waiting for nursing culture to give you permission to want more.
Where mindset work alone falls short
Most business coaches will tell you to work on your money mindset. Affirm your worth. Reframe the belief.
And you'll feel better for about 48 hours — until a real enrollment conversation happens and your nervous system does exactly what it always does.
Because this belief isn't cognitive. It's wired through years of professional conditioning, institutional culture, and in many cases, the deeper stories you carried into nursing long before you ever took your boards. Thoughts don't fix physiological responses. That's not a mindset gap. It's an identity gap operating at the nervous system level.
