Dear Karen,

A while back I came across a comment in a nursing forum. A nurse wrote: "I'm exhausted from doing 12-hour shifts then coming home to build my empire in the dark."

Because here's what I've realized — so many of us want to leave the hospital to escape a system that took things from us. And then, almost without noticing, we build the exact same system inside our own businesses. Different setting. Same trap. The always-on mentality follows us right through the door, except now there's no charge nurse to blame. We became the charge nurse. And we're every bit as demanding of ourselves.

I know that feeling all too well.

This is something I've been thinking about a lot recently, the story we were sold and told about what building a business is supposed to look like. Build big. Scale fast. Launch loud. Six figures minimum, preferably seven. A team, a funnel, a course, a membership, a podcast, content every single day.

And if you're not doing all of that? They say “You're playing small.”

But here's what I've noticed when I look at the women entrepreneurs I most admire: they're not running massive operations. They're running lean, relationship-led practices — a small number of right-fit clients, real breathing room, and income that actually reflects their expertise. No endless launches. No content hamster wheel.

Just work that genuinely feels like them.

That's what a conscious practice looks like. Not an empire. Something quieter, and so much more sustainable.

This week I wrote about this in full on my substack— the empire myth that's quietly selling nursepreneurs the wrong model, the over-certification trap that keeps brilliant nurses in perpetual "almost ready" mode, and what building differently can actually look like.

Before you go, I'm curious — what would you actually build or create if nobody was watching and nothing had to look impressive? What do you want?

If something came up for you, hit reply and tell me — I'd genuinely love to know.

With love,
Karen
